Lazy court-process clerk and stoner Dale Denton has only one reason to visit his equally lazy dealer Saul Silver: to purchase weed, specifically, a rare new strain called Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to a murder by a crooked cop and the city's most dangerous drug lord, he panics and dumps his roach of Pineapple Express at the scene. Dale now has another reason to visit Saul: to find out if the weed is so rare that it can be traced back to him–and it is. As Dale and Saul run for their lives, they quickly discover that they're not suffering from weed-fueled paranoia: incredibly, the bad guys really are hot on their trail and trying to figure out the fastest way to kill them both. All aboard the Pineapple Express.
I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this, i'd only seen the trailer once. This movie did not disappoint me. It was an original comedy for once that kept me laughing throughout. James Franco was superb, I never thought I could see him suitable for a role in a comedy movie after Annapolis but boy did he pull it off. Overall, the movie was not only funny but kept me involved until the end, it had pretty good action sequences believe it or not, and yet it still made you laugh.<br/><br/>Do yourself a favor and go see this one, you will not regret it. I give this movie a 9/10. Absolutely hilarious, and no you don't have to be a stoner to understand this one, although i cant see it hurting you.
I went into this thing with extremely low expectations. In fact, when I heard about it I thought it would be a sort of retarded "Grandma's Boy" type movie that completely sucked. In general, I am NOT a fan of 'pothead movies' or really of Seth Rogen.<br/><br/>That being said, I nearly peed my pants laughing. It completely took me by surprise! This movie is a complete ridiculous parody (but not by too much lol) of hardcore potheads, and that is really the only way that the movie gets away with it, because the fact of the matter is that most of the movie is comprised of 'nothing.' It is basically one long hilarious random disaster after another that only peopleidiotically stonedthese two could find themselves in, and unlike most movies like this it pulls it off really really well! James Franco's performancethe pot-dealer devoted to his "Bubbe" grandma is probably my favorite of his career; he is so ridiculously funny and he plays his part with such hilarious charm (despite his constant stoned condition).<br/><br/>Give this movie a chance! Go into this thing expecting just flat out zany laughs, don't go if you're looking for a movie with a tight, intense plot and a life lesson or anything. The biggest downside for me was the constant f-bombs but honestly it wasn't enough to ruin this movie. Two thumbs up!
It's empty and formulaic, with plotting that's lazy even by stoner-comedy standards. Without all the yuck-o sight gags, it would be a huge bummer.
Pineapple Express is based on a screenplay by Seth Rogen (who also stars in the film), Evan Goldberg, and Judd Apatow (who also produced the film). According to Apatow, the source of inspiration for Pineapple Express was <a href="/name/nm0000093/">Brad Pitt</a>'s character [a stoner named Floyd] in <a href="/title/tt0108399/">True Romance (1993)</a> (1993). "Paper Planes" by M.I.A Most viewers simply chalk it up to "suspension of disbelief". Some critics have likened Red's pseudo-immortality to Wile E. Coyote's, i.e. the ridiculous amount of punishment he is able to take is part of the joke. Others have seen ita reference to <a href="/title/tt0478311/">Knocked Up (2007)</a> (2007) in which the character Ben Stone (<a href="/name/nm0736622/">Seth Rogen</a>), praises the cure-all purposes of marijuana. "It is, like, the best medicine. 'Cause it fixes everything. Jonah broke his elbow once. We just… got high and… it still clicks but, I mean, he's ok." One of the complaints of the action sequences in this film is that they are very start-and-stop. As stated by Seth Rogen on the DVD commentary for the film, "the action is start-and-stop because we just really didn't have the money." This is an R-rated comedy, so the censored parts are not all that spectacular. To be frank, there is not one change that seems to be worth censoring, only new dialogues and story parts have been added. There are some violent sequences at the end, but those are in the R-ratedwell.
